Ethical & Sustainable Coffee at UCR

UCR Dining provides the campus community with coffee options that are acknowledged as ethical and sustainable through a variety of certifications. These include the following:

Ethical & Sustainable Coffee Certifications

Mammoth Coffee Roasting Co. was founded by UCR alumnus Steve Shatkin and his wife Tracie. Twenty percent of Mammoth’s proceeds benefit the Guardian Scholars Program, which helps facilitate the successful pursuit of higher education for vulnerable foster youth. Mammoth is Rainforest Alliance™ certified (more details on RA below) and we are proud to offer it in our two residential restaurants.

The Fair Trade Certified™ seal represents thousands of products that improve millions of lives by protecting land and waterways in 45 countries and counting. Purchases have sent $610 million to farmers and workers since 1998.

Coffee and Farmer Equity Practices (C.A.F.E.) is one of the coffee industry’s first set of sustainability standards and is verified by third-party experts. Developed in collaboration with Conservation International (CI), C.A.F.E. Practices has helped create a long-term supply of high-quality coffee and positively impact the lives and livelihoods of coffee farmers and their communities.

The Rainforest Alliance™ works with sustainable coffee farmers to improve their livelihoods and the health and well-being of their communities. Coffee farms or groups of smallholder farmers that earn the Rainforest Alliance™ certified seal are audited annually against a rigorous standard with detailed environmental, social and economic criteria.

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® offers organic, direct trade coffees sourced from certified organic farms all over the world. It nurtures long-lasting relationships with growers and supports their earth-friendly growing practices and social responsibility standards. The UCR location is proud to feature a daily-brewed organic coffee.
